Prayer is often misunderstood as our opportunity to convince God to give us what we want. But what if the true purpose of prayer is the opposite - to align our hearts with God's will? This profound truth emerges from one of the most vulnerable moments in Jesus' life, found in the Garden of Gethsemane.
In Matthew 26:38-42, we witness Jesus at His most human moment. This wasn't His worst day on the cross - that was actually His greatest victory. His worst day was in the garden, wrestling with what lay ahead.
"'My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death'" - Matthew 26:38 New King James Version (NKJV). This wasn't the serene, glowing Jesus often depicted in artwork. This was a man who "fell on his face" in anguish, not kneeling peacefully but collapsing under the weight of what was coming.
Jesus prayed three times: "'O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will'" - Matthew 26:39 New King James Version (NKJV).
This question cuts to the heart of our prayer life. Most of us, if we're honest, spend our prayer time telling God what we want and trying to convince Him to change His mind. We're focused on our problems, our needs, our desires - and there's nothing wrong with bringing these to God.
The word "nevertheless" appears repeatedly in Jesus' prayer. It's the hinge that moves us from our will to God's will. It acknowledges our human desires while surrendering to divine wisdom.
When we pray "nevertheless," we're saying: "God, I don't understand this, I don't want this, but I want You more than I want my way."
Jesus didn't face His darkest hour alone. He brought His closest disciples with Him to the garden. While He prayed alone, He needed their presence nearby.
Loneliness is the silent killer of faith. We cannot sustain deep spiritual battles in isolation. We need community, we need people who will simply "watch" with us during our difficult seasons.
Garden friends aren't necessarily those who pray with us - sometimes they just need to be present while we wrestle with God.
The goal of prayer isn't to get our way - it's to reach the place where we genuinely want what God wants. This transformation doesn't happen overnight, and it often involves struggle, just as it did for Jesus.
When we align our desires with God's will, we position ourselves to receive everything He has for us. God has unlimited resources, unlimited power, unlimited love - but these flow most freely when we're seeking His purposes rather than our own.
Whether facing health issues, relationship conflicts, financial stress, or uncertainty about the future, the "nevertheless" prayer transforms our approach. Instead of demanding specific outcomes, we learn to pray: "God, what do You want in this situation?"
This doesn't mean we stop asking for what we need or desire. It means we hold our requests with open hands, willing to accept God's answer even when it differs from our preferences.
This week, examine your prayer life honestly. Are you primarily trying to convince God to give you what you want, or are you genuinely seeking to understand and embrace His will?
Practice the "nevertheless" prayer in one specific area where you've been struggling. Start with your honest desires and concerns, but then add: "Nevertheless, not my will but Yours be done."
Questions for Reflection:
The journey from "my will" to "Your will" isn't easy, but it's the path Jesus walked before us. It's the only way through Calvary and out of the tomb - and it's the only way to find true peace in the midst of life's storms.
