Recently, we took a family trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas and rented a house on Lake Hamilton. It was a short trip that was a Fathers Day gift. Well before we left I told myself that I wanted to spend as much time as possible in Gods Word and prayer. For me, I wanted this to be a spiritual getaway I guess you could say. I had started the First 63 booklet weeks ago and quickly fell behind so I also wanted to catch up on that. The house was on the lake with a small boat dock and this is where I would have my morning coffee, bible study and prayer. As I was going through the first booklet I came across a section that asked me to stop and pray that God would show me what he wants me to see today, and then expect him to show up.! I guess never really thought of it in this way and it really hit me hard. “Expect him to show up”! Wow! So I did. Maybe 15 minutes later way down the bank of the lake on my side I saw a man fishing. He was really far away and he appeared to be headed my way slowly. Immediately I thought God?? Is this for me?? Remind you it was early in the morning and no one else was in the area on the water. It took about 15-20 minutes for this person to make it down to the dock I was on and as he floated up I said “Good morning, you catching anything?”, and he replied “Well, today’s not about catching.” So that caught my attention. He went on to tell me that he had just got back from a trip and it sounded like he needed a spiritual getaway as well. As we continued talking he told me that he was an associate pastor at a local church and that he had called his Pastor and told him he wasn’t going to be there today. It was Sunday morning by the way. So I immediately showed him my First 63 booklet and what I was working on. Over about an hour we talked and I shared with him that I was a fairly new Christian and some details about my family. It turned out that we had a lot in common not only a love the outdoors but he also had two children, both girls , the same as me. As I shared some things I’ve been struggling with mainly worry and fear for my youngest daughter Elin’s recent diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. He was able to share several scriptures off the top of his head that really helped. He said that one of his daughters best friends was diagnosed Type 1 when she was 10 years old( she was now an accountant in her late 20’s ) and assured me that it was going to be ok. He also shared with me that his wife about 9 years ago was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and had went through all the treatments and had survived! I also shared my wife Becky’s heart condition. The more we talked the more I felt like we had in common. From his working career that he work for the same company for 20 plus years to the details of his family trials. At some point he asked me if I had ever read the Book of Job. I answered no. He said you really should read it. So I agreed that I would definitely do that. We talked a little longer and he asked if he could pray for me and my family and of course I said yes. So he got out of the boat and put his hand on my shoulder and prayed a wonderfully powerful prayer. He hugged me and told me even though he didn’t know me, that he loved me! We exchanged phone numbers and he went on his way fishing. His name was Matt Mitchell. Well I read The Book of Job over the next couple of mornings and could understand why he recommended it to me at this time. Fast forward to a few days later we were coming home on Wednesday evening and Tess my 16 year old had planned to go to a baseball tournament in Atlanta Thursday morning with her boyfriend and his family. Well they left around 4:30 am to drive there and didn’t make it far down Hwy 78 when we got a phone call that said she had a seizure in the back seat and an ambulance had been called and was on the way. I jumped out of bed and was in the car in probably less than a minute. By the time I got close to where they pulled over the paramedic called me and said that she was ok and they were transporting her to Methodist Olive Branch. I waited on the side of the Hwy for them to come by and trailed them to the hospital. After running some tests they sent us home. Looking back at that morning on the dock and the prayer that I prayed that (God would show me what he wants me to see today .) I believe that morning was not about catching as Matt had said as he floated up to the dock. I believe that meeting was to prepare me for what was coming. I am so thankful for this encounter with the True Living God and that he protected Tess from this scary event. Thank you Jesus!
