Guard the Door: Biblical Standards for Sexual Purity

In a world that has become sexually insane, God's Word provides clear guidance for living in sexual purity. The Bible doesn't sanitize or hide from uncomfortable topics - from Genesis to Revelation, it addresses sexual brokenness honestly while offering redemption and restoration.

Why God Doesn't Hide from Sexual Topics

The Scriptures are remarkably honest about sexual sin. From the early chapters of Genesis through the final book of Revelation, the Bible exposes sexual brokenness without embarrassment. This isn't because God enjoys discussing these matters, but because sexual sin is never minor - it destroys families, fractures trust, invites judgment, and threatens destinies.

Yet the same Bible that exposes sexual sin also offers sexual redemption. God doesn't sanitize His Word because He intends to sanctify His people.

What Does God Want for Your Sexual Life?

1. God Wants You Set Apart

"For this is the will of God, your sanctification" - 1 Thessalonians 4:3a

God's will isn't mysterious when it comes to sexual purity. He wants us sanctified - set apart, different from the world. Sanctification means being put to your correct use, fulfilling the purpose for which you were originally intended.

This isn't optional Christianity for super-spiritual people. This is God's standard for every believer, regardless of age or circumstances. You don't age out of holiness.

2. God Wants You to Stay Sexually Virtuous

"That you should abstain from sexual immorality" - 1 Thessalonians 4:3b

The word "sexual immorality" comes from the Greek word "porneia" - a broad term that includes any sexual activity outside God's design. This encompasses:

  • Adultery
  • Any sex before marriage
  • Any extramarital relationships
  • Every form of sexual perversion

Save sex for covenant marriage. This isn't God shrinking your life; it's God sparing your life. Sexual sin promises pleasure but delivers pain.

3. God Says Govern Yourself

"That each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor" - 1 Thessalonians 4:4

Don't let your physical desires run your life. You're not an animal driven by impulse - you're an image bearer indwelled by the Spirit of the living God. Self-control is possible and can be learned through practice.

You will never drift into purity. Holiness is intentional, choosing honor over impulse and long-term joy over short-term pleasure.

4. Don't Copy People Who Don't Know the Lord

"Not in passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God" - 1 Thessalonians 4:5

Don't let unbelievers define your standards of right and wrong. The culture says "follow your heart," but God says "follow Me." The difference between believers and non-believers isn't intelligence or upbringing - it's whether someone knows God.

People who don't know God follow their passions. People who do know God master theirs.

5. Don't Use People

"That no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter" - 1 Thessalonians 4:6

Sexual sin always takes something. It steals innocence, obliterates trust, removes peace, and takes what belongs to a future spouse. When you sleep with someone without lifelong commitment, you're becoming one flesh without making a covenant.

Love protects; lust exploits and destroys. Sexual activity creates real spiritual and emotional bonds that God designed for marriage alone.

6. Don't Refuse God's Voice

"Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit" - 1 Thessalonians 4:8

To treat sexual purity lightly is to treat God lightly. But God doesn't command holiness and then abandon you. What He commands, He empowers through His Holy Spirit living in believers.

Why Does Sexual Purity Matter?

Sex Was God's Idea

"So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply'" - Genesis 1:27-28

Your sex life inside marriage is a blessing from God. Sex isn't dirty - it's empowered from heaven. When done within the covenant of marriage, it's actually worship to God.

Sex Belongs in a Covenant

"Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, and were not ashamed" - Genesis 2:24-25

Fire in the fireplace warms the home, but fire outside on the carpet burns it all down. Sexual activity outside the covenant of marriage is destructive rather than life-giving.

Your Body Is a Temple

"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price" - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Where you go, Jesus goes. Your body belongs to God because you were purchased with the precious blood of Christ. Purity isn't about earning God's love - it's about living like you've already been purchased by it.

How to Guard the Door

Let Scripture Set the Boundaries

"Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge" - Hebrews 13:4

Ask hard questions before sin asks them for you. Let God's Word establish your boundaries, not cultural norms or personal desires.

Build Walls Before Temptation

"I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?" - Job 31:1

What you look at shapes what you love. Don't flirt with secrecy, especially in our digital age where pornography is easily accessible. The battle for purity is often won or lost at your screen.

Don't cultivate private emotional intimacy with someone who's not your spouse. Opposite-gender friendships for married people and "work spouses" are dangerous territory that can destroy families.

Bring Sin into the Light

"Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed" - James 5:16

You won't break strongholds of sexual sin by yourself behind closed doors. Find a trusted, same-gender believer in your church who can pray for you and hold you accountable. Sin grows in darkness; freedom emerges from confession.

Life Application

Holiness builds the home; sexual sin burns it down. This week, take an honest inventory of your sexual life and choices. Are you living according to God's design, or have you adopted the world's standards?

Consider these questions:

  • What boundaries do I need to establish to protect my sexual purity?
  • Are there relationships, habits, or influences I need to eliminate that are pulling me away from God's standards?
  • Who is a trusted believer I can confess to and ask for prayer and accountability?
  • How can I better honor God with my body as His temple?

Remember, if you've failed in this area, there's a path back through repentance. God's grace is sufficient, and His Spirit empowers you to live in holiness. The goal isn't perfection but progress in becoming the person God designed you to be.
